Remand order extended for fifth suspect in assault on a disabled man

PETALING JAYA: The remand period for the fifth suspect detained in the case of assault on a disabled man in Chukai, Kemaman, on Friday (Jan 17) has been extended for two more days.

Magistrate Sharifah Amirda Shasha Amir Sharifuddin issued the remand extension order against the 41-year-old man on Thursday (Jan 23).

This is to enable further investigations to be carried out against the suspect under Section 147 of the Penal Code.

The suspect was previously remanded for three days after being arrested while giving a statement at the Kemaman police headquarters around 11.30pm last Sunday (Jan 19).

Acting Kemaman OCPD deputy Supt Wan Muhamad Wan Ja'afar said so far six suspects believed to be involved in the incident have been arrested, reported Sinar Harian on Wednesday (Jan 22).

On Friday, a video of a disabled man being beaten by several individuals went viral on social media.

Initial investigations show that the incident occurred after the victim, who was riding a motorcycle, crashed into a stall at a farmer’s market.
