THOUSANDS are expected to converge on Sabah’s northeastern district of Sandakan to witness Elopura Fights: Reunion of Champions, an electrifying event promising a feast for muay thai enthusiasts and a boost for local tourism.

Set to take place on Jan 11 and 12 at SMJK Tiong Hua Sandakan, the much-anticipated tournament will showcase top-tier muay thai talent, legendary fighters and an opportunity for community engagement.

Sandakan Muaythai Association president Mohamad Ajman Ajmain said the two-day event will feature around 120 amateur and professional bouts, with participants from Malaysia and Thailand.

Sanctioned by the Malaysian Muaythai Association and the Sabah Muaythai Association, and supervised by the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) and the World Muaythai Council (WMC), the tournament guarantees professionalism and adherence to global standards.

Adding prestige to the event, the Sabah Education Department has recognised muay thai as an official extracurricular activity for student-athletes, further encouraging youth participation in the sport.

While amateur bouts will run from 8am to 4pm, the spotlight will shift to professional fights during the night session, scheduled from 7pm to 11pm.

Local champions 23-year-old Riedzwan Norsyahmie Daud, who is set to face a fighter from Thailand, and Dazaisy Hafiyy Aznee are expected to deliver thrilling performances, igniting pride among the local crowd.

Taking the excitement to another level, muay thai legends Ali Yaakub, known as “Captain Malaysia”, and Hasril Nazmi, famously dubbed “Dancing Boy”, will make special appearances.Their participation is expected to elevate the event’s prestige and inspire the next generation of fighters.

“The Elopura Fights is more than just a sporting competition – it is a catalyst for economic growth,” said Mohamad Ajman.

“By attracting participants, officials, and fans from across the country, the event is poised to stimulate Sandakan’s local economy.”

He added that hotels, eateries, transport operators and cultural attractions are expected to see increased activity, positioning Sabah’s second-largest city as a vibrant sports tourism destination.

The tournament promises a dynamic start to 2025 for Sandakan, blending sports, culture, and tourism into a single platform.

“By fostering community spirit, nurturing athletic talent and boosting economic development, Elopura Fights: Reunion of Champions aims to leave a lasting legacy for the region,” Mohamad Ajman said.
