Three squatter homes torn down in water village near KK

KOTA KINABALU: Three dilapidated squatter houses rented out to immigrants in Sembulan Tengah near here have been demolished.

The demolition was conducted by City Hall (DBKK) officials and other agencies between 9am and 2pm on Monday (Jan 6).

According to a DBKK statement, notices of demolition were issued to the occupants to give them enough time to move out before the operation.

Security agencies such as police and immigration personnel were present to monitor the safety of those involved in the demolition.

Local authorities had identified several structures in the water village area that were unsafe for occupation and had expired land leases but were rented out to immigrants.

There were no reports of any incidents during the whole process and the operation went smoothly, the statement added.

Officials from the Sabah Water Department, Lands and Surveys Department, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd, the community development leadership unit, and units under DBKK were present to assist.

Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah also observed the operation.

The statement added that the demolition was part of the state's ongoing exercise on squatter homes.
