Three-night-long CNY carnival to be held at Merdeka Square in KK

KOTA KINABALU: The Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) annual Chinese New Year carnival will bring festive cheer to the city from Jan 24 to Jan 26.

FCAS president Tan Sri Goh Tian Chuan announced that the "2025 Year of the Snake Spring Festival Carnival," hosted in collaboration with Kota Kinabalu City Hall, will take place at Merdeka Square.

The President of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) mentioned that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is expected to officiate the event on Jan 24, while Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Foong Hin will attend the "Joyful Spring Festival Night" celebration on Jan 25.

The three-night event will feature a variety of programs, including lion dances, singing and dancing performances by primary and secondary school students, cultural exhibitions, food stalls, and interactive activities, creating a vibrant festive atmosphere.

Goh hopes this grand annual cultural event will provide the public with a refreshing experience while promoting the charm and value of Chinese culture and bringing the multiracial community together for the Lunar New Year.

He believes this grand event will attract enthusiastic participation from diverse communities, making it a highlight of Chinese New Year celebrations in Sabah and Kota Kinabalu.

During a recent courtesy call to Chan, he expressed admiration and support for FCAS's commitment to preserving Chinese culture and traditions under Goh’s leadership.

Chan praised FCAS for its dedication to organising meaningful programs and activities that enrich the Chinese New Year celebrations despite various challenges.

He also noted that relocating the event to Merdeka Square this year is an exciting and groundbreaking move, as the carnival was previously held at the smaller Lido Commercial area.
