CM backs proposal for Kota Laksamana to become new state capital

MELAKA: A proposal to develop Kota Laksamana into a major economic centre and the new state capital has been welcomed by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Ab Rauf had expressed his agreement with a proposal by Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong to designate the reclamation site at Kota Laksamana as a new central state development centre.

Low had suggested that his constituency be made the state capital during the state assembly sitting yesterday.

“I never expected the Chief Minister to be favourable to the idea of shifting the capital from the historic city to Kota Laksamana.

“It envisions a transformative shift for the state’s economic hub,” he said in an interview.

Low said the proposed new capital should be named only after all essential infrastructure has been developed and fully operational to support the transition.

“This is a significant move that requires meticulous planning to ensure it benefits the state and the people,” he said.

Low said Kota Laksamana is a newly developed area with vast potential for modern infrastructure and an ideal location for the capital due to its strategic location and capacity for sustainable urban development.

He said Ab Rauf acknowledged the merit of the proposal, stating that such a move aligns with Melaka’s long-term vision for growth and progress.

Low said the initiative has the potential to elevate Melaka’s status as a progressive state, attracting investments and creating new opportunities for the people.

Kota Laksamana sits on a vast tract of reclaimed land that has been turned into a commercial hub.

The site gradually replaced Taman Melaka Raya, which held the crown since the 1990s.

The area is also located close to the historic city.
