KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 92 traffic summonses were issued following an early morning operation in the city on New Year's Day.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the operation involving 53 officers and personnel were conducted at Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Semarak at about 3am on Wednesday (Jan 1).
"We inspected 147 motorcycles and nine cars. The most offences committed were for fancy number plates and not having a driving license," he said at the scene after the operation ended at about 5am.
ACP Mohd Zamzuri said 38 motorcycles were also seized during the operation.
"We closed off a section of Jalan Semarak for the operation.
"We conducted the operation following complaints that ‘mat rempit’ had resorted to even more dangerous stunts.
"While the countdown (to the new year) was over, a large number of motorcyclists were gathered along Jalan Semarak.
"We cordoned off a section of the road to block them and conduct the operation," he said.
Most of the motorcycles used by the “mat rempit” were illegally modified, he said.
"The motorcycles and their owners were brought to the Traffic police station for further inspections," he added.
ACP Mohd Zamzuri said the “mat rempit” has also posted videos of their exploits on social media sites.
"We are identifying the individuals.
"We urge motorists not to be involved in illegal races as it can endanger others on the road," he said.
