IGP files defamation suit against blogger Papagomo

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has filed a defamation suit against blogger Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, known as Papagomo.

The IGP, as the plaintiff, lodged the suit in connection with a statement uploaded via video on YouTube and TikTok, which was also shared on other social media platforms.

Lawyer Raam Kumar, representing Razarudin, stated that the suit was filed at the High Court on Thursday (Dec 26).

"The suit was served to Papagomo on Friday (Dec 27).

"The plaintiff is claiming damages for verbal defamation, written defamation, general damages, aggravated or exemplary damages, and special damages.

"The plaintiff has also sought an injunction to prevent the defendant, whether personally, through employees, or any other party, from issuing defamatory statements or words, as well as from publishing or facilitating the re-publication of such statements," Raam said.

He added that the plaintiff demanded the defendant retract the defamatory statement and delete and destroy all related videos, publications, messages, or materials.

"The plaintiff also demanded that the defendant issue an apology and retract the slanderous statement through all social media and online media accounts, with the content of the apology to be agreed upon by the plaintiff first," he said.

It was previously reported that Papagomo was being investigated for allegedly insulting the IGP.

The blogger is believed to have uploaded a 31-minute video containing disparaging remarks against the IGP.

A police report was lodged against the suspect, and his statement was recorded at Setapak police station at 3pm on Dec 19 concerning the investigation.

The case is classified under Section 500 and 504 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.
