Carcasses of cat, dog found at UM campus

KUALA LUMPUR: The carcasses of a cat and a dog have been discovered at Universiti Malaya campus grounds on Wednesday (Dec 25) evening.

The carcasses were found at two separate locations within the university.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa says they have received a report on the matter.

"We are still at the early part of the investigation. We will definitely investigate the matter further," he said when contacted.

The recent discoveries follow the deaths of several other cats on the campus.

Meanwhile, the university’s Student Union (KMUM) says the matter has been reported to the Security Office and police.

"I have contacted the security office and requested tighter access controls to the campus. We are also in the process of obtaining CCTV footage," the union added in a now-viral statement.

Prior to this, Rajesh Nagarajan of Lawyers for Animal Rights has said he believes a "psychopath" is killing cats at UM.

He said a veterinarian's report indicated a cat's limbs were severed with a sharp weapon.

"If this is the work of a psychopath, we are concerned about the safety of students and staff of UM apart from that of stray animals,” he said at a press conference on Monday (Dec 23).

Similarly, activist Shima Aris said she learnt of multiple cat-killing cases at the campus in recent months and added that the remains were buried in the compound.

In the latest case, undergraduates handed her a cat carcass on Dec 20.

Shima sought a veterinarian's help to determine the cause of death.

She added that the cat, known as Lily, was fed and cared for by university students and staff.

Following the press conference, Comm Rusdi says a police investigation on the cat killings at the university has commenced.

He said police would call in activists who held the press conference.

"They will have their statements recorded on Thursday (Dec 26)," he said.
