Driver killed after hitting power pole near Kuala Penyu, Sabah


KOTA KINABALU: A 38-year-old driver was killed in an accident at Kilometre 32 of the Beaufort–Menumbok Road near Kuala Penyu on Monday evening (December 23).

The accident occurred at 3.50pm when the victim's Toyota Hilux skidded off the road, collided with a power pole and overturned, trapping him inside the vehicle.

The victim is a resident of Taman Seri Gaya, Kota Kinabalu and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from the Kuala Penyu Hospital due to severe head injuries.

Beaufort District Police Chief Supt Wong Leong Meng said the vehicle was travelling from Kota Kinabalu to Menumbok when it veered off the road, hit a power pole, and overturned.

"Initial investigations suggest the vehicle suddenly swerved off the right side of the road and struck a power pole before overturning," he said.

Firefighters arrived to extricate the victim, whose body has been transferred to the Forensic Unit at Beaufort Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police are continuing their investigation and are seeking witnesses, as the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
