KOTA KINABALU: Christmas came early for Jetrin Akang and his family as they finally have a home to call their own.
The 39-year-old lorry driver, his wife Lorina Lawrence, 35, and their two children previously lived under the same roof with five other families in his parents' house.
Now, they can enjoy a more comfortable and private life, following the presentation of a house under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) housing programme.
"I feel so relieved. Living with my parents alongside five families was difficult and uncomfortable," he said after receiving a symbolic replica key on Wednesday (Dec 11).
"I am truly grateful for this home. Thanks to the government, we now have our own space. Our dream has been realised,” he said.
State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister and Membakut assemblyman Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif presented keys to several families, accompanied by Membakut district officer Ibrahim Terki.
Another recipient, Unsiu Kusingan from Kampung Kayai, also expressed gratitude for the new house, replacing the dilapidated structure that had been home to his family for over four decades.
"I am happy to be moving into a comfortable home, which I will share with my children and grandchildren. The old house was falling apart," he said after Arifin handed him the replica key.
In Kampung Poring Maragang, elderly resident Innting Kalingan also received an SMJ home.
Arifin said 40 more SMJ homes have been approved for Membakut residents next year.
"SMJ is the vision of the Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and we in Membakut are truly thankful for this support.
"This year, we delivered 20 homes, just as we did last year. But next year, the number will double to 40 homes.
"We have compiled the list of applicants, and the district office will review it," he said.
