Mother taking daughter to school killed in Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: A mother who was driving her nine-year-old daughter to school died when her car collided with another vehicle that was making an U-turn.

The victim, Hazwah Jubrine, a clerk at Sekolah Kebangsaan St Francis Convent, was on her way to work on early Wednesday (Dec 11) with her daughter, Nur Adelia Amanda Mohd Aizat, who attends the same school.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda said the accident occurred on Lintas-Kepayan Road here, involving Hazwah's car and another vehicle carrying two men, Mohammad Nurshahrani Aziz, 20, and Beduin Kantumi, 28.

He said the other car with the two men attempted a sudden U-turn but struck the road divider and went out of control.

He said the car then entered the opposite lane and collided with the victim's car.

ACP Kasim said Hazwah sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Her daughter escaped unhurt.

Kasim said that the accident was caused by the negligence of the driver of the car with the two men and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Putatan Fire Station chief Noor Sherriyana Bohari said a team of eight firemen were dispatched to the scene about 9km away after receiving a distress call at 5.21am.

He said the girl, Nur Adelia, had already been rescued by the public before firefighters arrived.

"Firefighters extricated the woman's body from the wrecked car, while the two injured men were taken to hospital," said Noor Sherriyana.
