Communist-themed tableware used by restaurant was to attract China customers, says top cop

KUALA LUMPUR: The communist-themed tableware used by the BBQ restaurant in Klang was to attract customers from China, say police.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the female restaurant owner, who was detained in a raid on Wednesday (Dec 4), used the tableware to attract customers by replicating the ambience of their home country.

"The tableware was purchased online by the owner's boyfriend, who is a Chinese National," he said when contacted on Friday (Dec 6).

Initial investigation revealed that the tableware had been used since the restaurant opened, he said.

"So far, we only detained the 20-year-old female owner and we are continuing our investigation.

"The restaurant has a valid license," he added.

It was reported that a BBQ restaurant in Bandar Botanic, Klang, which served food using communist-themed tableware, was raided by the police at about 10pm on Wednesday by a team of police personnel from the South Klang CID.

The raid was based on surveillance and intel gathering after a video of the restaurant went viral on YouTube.

"We seized five ceramic bowls with photos of China's communist leader Mao Zedong and his compatriots, a ceramic mug with wordings and photos, a soup spoon with Mao Zedong's photo and business receipts," said Razarudin.

He said checks would also be conducted on the YouTube user who uploaded the video.

"We are always committed to ensuring that no parties try to threaten public order and harmony," he said.
