Take usual precautions in South Korea, says Wisma Putra

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians in South Korea should take usual safety precautions following the lifting of martial law across the country, says the Foreign Ministry.

"Malaysians residing in or visiting South Korea are advised to take the usual safety precautions and stay informed by following any guidance issued by local authorities," it said in a press release issued on Wednesday (Dec 4).

It added that Malaysians in South Korea are advised to register their presence through E-Konsular to ensure timely updates and assistance.

Wisma Putra then said that those seeking consular assistance can contact the Malaysian Embassy in Seoul at 129, Dokseodang-ro Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul 04419, Republic of Korea through its general line at +82-2-2077 8600 or at +82-2-794 5488.

This comes after the Republic's president Yoon Suk Yeol said on Wednesday he would lift a surprise martial law declaration he had imposed just hours before.

Hours earlier, he had backed down in a standoff with parliament which roundly rejected his attempt to ban political activity and censor the media.

In South Korea's biggest political crisis in decades, Yoon shocked the nation and declared martial law on Tuesday (Dec 3) night to thwart "anti-state forces" among his domestic political opponents.

However, outraged lawmakers unanimously rejected the decree. Yonhap news agency said the cabinet had agreed early on Wednesday to scrap the martial law.

Protesters outside the National Assembly parliament shouted and clapped. “We won!” they chanted, and one demonstrator banged on a drum.

The main opposition Democratic Party called for Yoon, who has been in office since 2022, to resign or face impeachment.
