Government to look into media outlets’ concerns, pledges Anwar

PETALING JAYA: The government will take a detailed look at the concerns raised by several media organisations on proposed amendments to the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (PPPA), says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister, in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Dec 4), pledged to carry out the review after his senior press secretary represented him to receive the groups’ memorandum at a protest march.

“The government, through the relevant ministry, will review every protest, criticism, and suggestion raised to ensure a positive environment for the media industry while safeguarding their rights and freedom,” Anwar said in the post.

About 50 journalists and members of civil society groups including National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJM), Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ), and Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) held a march towards the Parliament building here on Wednesday morning.

The group then handed over a memorandum opposing several proposals to amend laws that could affect press freedom and freedom of expression.
