Foreigner claiming to be a local held in Immigration op

JOHOR BARU: An Indonesian woman claiming to be Malaysian has been detained after getting into an argument with Immigration Department enforcement officers.

Johor Immigration director Datuk Rusdi Darus said the incident took place during operations at several shops in Taman Tampoi Indah here on Sunday (Dec 1) afternoon.

“The woman happened to walk past, so the enforcement officers asked her where she was from.

“She claimed to be a Malaysian but when asked to produce her MyKad, she became evasive and claimed to have left it at home.

“She then provoked the officers by shouting at them and also tried to run away," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 4).

He added that the woman, in her 30s, was then detained for further investigation.

He said she was among 24 foreigners held during the operation.

According to Rusdi, they are from Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka and aged 20 to 45.

He added that they were brought to the Setia Tropika Immigration depot to be investigated for abusing social visit passes, overstaying or not having identification documents.

The department also issued 12 notices against employers during the operation, he said.

He urged anyone with information about undocumented migrants or employers hiring them to inform the Johor Immigration office at 07-233 8400.
