Retired UFC lightweight champ Khabib to open gym in Johor, says MB

JOHOR BARU: Retired mix martial artist Khabib “the Eagle” Nurmagomedov will open his gym in Johor, says Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

He added that he, together with the state government delegation, met with Khabib, who is the former UFC lightweight champion, in Abu Dhabi.

“During Khabib’s audience session with Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim in early Oct, we discussed about youth development programme and suggestions for opening a training gymnasium in the state.

“Through the meeting today, I witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Johor Sports Council and the undefeated mixed martial artist for the opening of Khabib gym in Johor,” he said in a Facebook post here on Tuesday (Dec 3).

Onn added that the state delegation, who is currently on a business trip in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), also visited the Eagle or Khabib gym located in Abu Dhabi.

“I am very impressed to witness such a world-class facility at the gym which also has an MMA octagon and a special area for self-defence arts such as Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing and wrestling.

“In addition, the gym is also equipped with complete equipment for cardio and weight lifting. Rehabilitation facilities are also provided, including a sauna and a swimming pool that give users the opportunity to achieve the best performance in training,” he said.

Onn Hafiz expressed his hope that through this cooperation, Johor would continue to progress in community development and be able to open more world-class sports facilities, which will benefit locals especially the youth to be involved in the world of sports.
