Flash floods displace residents amid relentless rain in Ipoh


IPOH: Several residential areas here have been inundated following over 10 hours of continuous rainfall since Saturday evening (Nov 30).

According to the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, among the areas hit by flash floods were Kampung Tasek, Kampung Seri Kinta, and Arena Kepayang Putra.

According to department director Sayani Saidon, the firemen rescued five people, including a little girl, from a house in Kampung Tasek on Sunday (Dec 1) at about 11.05am.

"They were rescued with a boat and have been relocated to the Kampung Tasek community hall.

"At Kampung Seri Kinta, we also rescued four senior citizens and a child from their home at about 12.20pm," she said, adding that the water level was about 2m high.

"They are seeking shelter at the Kampung Seri Kinta community hall," she said on Sunday.

"Rescue operation is currently ongoing at Arena Kepayang Putra, as there are folk trapped in 11 roads there," she added.

A State Disaster Management Committee spokesman said that there are currently 126 people who have been affected by the flash flood.

The spokesman said 43 people from Kampung Teluk Kertang and Kampung Matang Pasir in Taiping are seeking shelter at SK Matang Gelugor.

"In the Kinta district, 38 people from four villages in Batu Gajah are seeking shelter at Dewan Bandaran Kinta while 45 people from Kampung Sri Kinta in Ipoh have been relocated to the village community hall," he said.
