81 healthcare facilities affected by floods

PETALING JAYA: Some 81 healthcare facilities across Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah have been impacted by the floods, says the Health Ministry.

It said 49 of the facilities were in Kelantan, 28 in Terengganu and four in Kedah.

Of the total number, 41 comprised rural clinics, 19 health clinics, 11 dental clinics, four hospitals, five district offices and one at an international entry point.

“32 of the facilities are still operational while 49 have been moved to an alternative facility,” it said in a statement on Sunday (Dec 1).

As of Nov 30, the ministry said 8,889 evacuees at temporary relief centres have been evaluated and given medical attention.

Of this number, 1,558 cases of Acute Respiratory Infection were recorded.

There were also 451 cases of skin infections, 48 cases of conjunctivitis, 44 cases of acute Gastroenteritis, 14 cases of chickenpox and five cases of hand, foot and mouth disease.

“No Covid-19, Typhoid or leptospirosis cases have been reported among flood victims so far,” it said.

The Ministry added that mental health and psychological support services were carried out at 66 temporary relief centres in Terengganu.

“No victims were referred for further treatment,” it said.

Some 20 medical emergency teams comprising 104 healthcare personnel across nine states have also been mobilised to Pasir Mas, Pasir Putih and Tumpat in Kelantan.

“74 personnel have been mobilised today (Dec 1) with the remaining 30 scheduled to be mobilised tomorrow.

“Teams from the ‘Be Vital’ non-governmental organisation comprising 10 personnel, including four doctors, also arrived in Kelantan yesterday to provide aid,” it said, adding that Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad also observed ministry operations at several temporary relief centres in Kedah on Sunday.

The Ministry added that the Kelantan and Terengganu Health Departments were coordinating with the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) for field works.

“The community is advised to always prioritise safety, ensure personal hygiene and avoid any risk of contracting infectious diseases.

“If faced with emotional stress, do get immediate help,” it added.
