Postpone SPM, urge parents and teachers

PETALING JAYA: With the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) coming around the corner, parents and teachers in Kelantan, the state most affected by floods, are asking the authorities to postpone the examinations.

A female teacher in Tanah Merah hopes the exams will be postponed.

She has been helping the rescue teams to evacuate 58 students from her school, of which 38 would be sitting for the SPM, to the flood relief centres.

“The water level is high and there is no electricity.

“The students all seemed emotionally disturbed and worried about how they are going to sit for their exams.

“Since the line is very bad here, they can’t even get a chance to speak with their parents.

“We have spent so much time evacuating. They also don’t have enough clothes to wear at this point,” she said when contacted yesterday.

The SPM 2024 examination is from Dec 2 to Feb 6 next year.

Housewife Norlaila Ahmad, 46, from Tanah Merah, is worried about the loss of power supply in her house due to the floods.

“My daughter is studying with just her tablet. There is no electricity and she is using it with battery power only.

“I think it would be fair if the SPM is postponed to give our children the right environment to sit for the exams.”

In Putrajaya, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said aid in the form of food baskets and transportation facilities will be given to students at public higher education institutions affected by the floods.

“We are working together with the National Disaster Management Agency on this,” he said, adding hotlines have been set up internally within the universities to assist the students.
