Floods: 8,838 evacuees in Kelantan, Rantau Panjang paralysed after main entry cut off

KOTA BARU: The number of flood evacuees in Kelantan has now reached 8,838 people as of 2.43pm Wednesday (Nov 27) after nine districts - Kota Baru, Pasir Mas, Tumpat, Bachok, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai, Machang, and Jeli - were hit by rising waters.

Pasir Mas recorded the highest number of victims relocated to temporary evacuation centres (PPS), which is 1,634 people, followed by Kota Bharu (1,561) and then Pasir Puteh (1,386), Malay language daily Sinar Harian reported.

Meanwhile, Rantau Panjang town, known for its shopping locations, is almost paralysed after the main route into the area was flooded.

This is because the entrance to the area can only be accessed by heavy vehicles.

Kelantan police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said, as of 1pm Wednesday, heavy vehicles could still enter Rantau Panjang.

"However, I will monitor the situation and current developments in the area," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Wednesday.

Earlier, a Facebook post said that the water level in Rantau Panjang was at 10.59m, exceeding the danger level of 8m.

In the same development, Comm Yusoff said the flood situation in the state is still under control.

He advised residents living in low-lying areas to move early if their homes were flooded.

According to him, the situation would make it difficult for rescue teams to relocate those involved to the relief centres if the water starts to rise rapidly or the currents re strong.
