Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta kicks off at Straits Quay Marina


GEORGE TOWN: The Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta (PIDBR) 2024 kicked off with a bang at Straits Quay Marina for the first time on Saturday (Nov 23).

The international competition, which has been held at Teluk Bahang Dam since the 1990s, will be held over two days until Sunday (Nov 24).

The annual event saw the participation of 61 teams from 12 countries comprising about 1,600 rowers from around the world including China, Hong Kong SAR, UK, Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, UAE, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines, Chinese Taipei and Malaysia.

Organised by the state government with the collaboration of the Consulate General Office of China in Penang and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) as main partners and sponsors, the competition is also to celebrate the 50 years of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.

Also present were Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, consul-general of China in Penang Zhou Youbin and several state executive councillors.

Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak is expected to attend the event tomorrow evening.
