KUALA LUMPUR: Days before Budget 2027 is tabled, ministries and agencies have proposed development projects costing RM944bil, with RM80.4bil needed next year alone, says the Economy Ministry.
The bids cover 9,955 new and continuing projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply.
Budget 2027 will be tabled on Friday (Oct 9).
The combined cost of the projects is more than double the RM430bil allocated for development over the entire five-year plan, according to a separate reply by the ministry.
This year's Budget 2026 set aside RM81bil for development expenditure.
The ministry said each application would be assessed against national development priorities and the government's fiscal position.
"To ensure that approved projects can be implemented immediately, the 13th Malaysia Plan sets a target that no development project remains unstarted in the second year after approval," it said.
It aims to bring the share of such projects down to zero by 2030.
The ministry was replying to Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodi (GPS-Sri Aman), who asked how the government ensured project announcements came with funding and a clear timeline so they did not end up as announcements without implementation.
It said ministries and agencies were accountable for their projects, which are monitored through mechanisms including the Implementation Coordination Unit in the Prime Minister's Department.
