Family of nine escapes unhurt as home collapses into sea in Semporna

KOTA KINABALU: A family of nine were slightly hurt when their water village home collapsed and fell into the sea in Semporna district.

The incident happened around the afternoon on Saturday (Nov 23), when the victims were home having lunch and doing their own thing.

Semporna Water Village Fire Station chief Noor Jali Maslah said a team was sent when they received a call about the incident at around 1:11 p.m.

“We found that a house had collapsed and fallen into the sea at Kg Air Semporna,” he said in a statement.

He said nine people, including a man, three women, three boys and two girls, were rescued from the wreckage.

Noor said one of the boys, who had speech problems, was stuck in the collapsed room but was also rescued to safety.

He said the victims have been identified as Jamal Sabiran, Sairan Sabiran, Nursupiana Amirzal, Munirah Amirzal, Muhammad Aryan Abdul Majid, Muhammad Izudian Amiruddin, Muhammad Izzat Amiruddin, Azramiajiniah Abdul Majid and Nurizzafatimah Amiruddin.

He said the firefighters were unable to obtain details of their ages as their identification documents all fell into the sea and got lost, adding that they were all sent to the village public hall to seek shelter temporarily.

Noor said they were given medical checkups, and all were found to be fine except for some bruises and cuts.

Operations on site ended at 2.59pm after firemen eliminated all hazardous elements, he said.
