Next-gen IC can help curb identity theft, misuse and data leaks, Dewan Rakyat told


KUALA LUMPUR: The upgraded identity card is in its final phase of development and will replace the version used since 2012, says Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.

"The design will be more modern with laser engraving and more advanced holograms in line with the latest security developments.

"It is made of polycarbonate material that has been tested for durability and has a security chip with a larger deposit capacity for enhanced security and encryption," he said.

This will curb identity fraud, misuse of the identity card and data leaks, he told Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Nov 20).

Shamsul also said that from 2022 to Oct 31 this year, the National Registration Department (NRD) has arrested 519 people for offences under the National Registration Regulations 1990.

"Of those, 190 were charged, of whom 130 were found with false MyKad, while 60 had another person's MyKad in their possession," he said.
