Woman loses over RM85,000 to 'Korean man' in love scam

SIBU: A woman has been conned of RM86,841 after she fell for a scammer claiming to be a Korean man.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili, said the police's Commercial Crime Investigation Division received a report on Nov 14 from the 30-year-old woman, claiming she was cheated of RM86,841.

"The victim said she got to know a Korean man through the Tinder application," he said.

On June 19, the suspect promised to come to Malaysia to meet the victim once his visa application was approved.

"The suspect also claimed he had made several deliveries to her but Indonesian customs had detained the packages in transit to Malaysia," said ACP Zulkipli.

On July 25, an individual impersonating a customs officer called the victim and asked her to make several payments for a "clearance certificate" so the goods could be sent to Malaysia.

"The woman made a total of 25 transactions totalling RM86,841 into eight accounts," said Zulkipli, adding that she suspected something was amiss when told to make more payments

She eventually realised she had been cheated when the suspect could not be contacted.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
