Lorry driver remanded four days in fatal Bukit Mertajam container accident


BUKIT MERTAJAM: The 51-year-old trailer driver whose container fell and crushed a motorist has been remanded for four days, as reported by Sin Chew Daily.

Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan issued the remand order until Nov 17.

When the driver was brought to the magistrate's court at about 8.20am on Thursday (Nov 14), he flashed a 'V' sign twice to the waiting reporters.

On Wednesday (Nov 13), 21-year-old Lee Zi Rou was waiting at the Jalan Kebun Sireh-Jalan Bukit Tengah traffic lights when the trailer, approaching from the opposite direction, made a sharp left turn.

This reportedly caused the container it was carrying to overbalance, detach, and fall on Lee's car during the 9.15am incident.

Lee, who was alone in the car on her way to work, was crushed to death.

Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Helmi Aris stated on Wednesday that the driver was detained for further investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"Preliminary screenings for urine and alcohol were negative, but an application for his remand will be made at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate Court on Thursday," he said.
