Tiger run over by lorry on East-West Highway

IPOH: A tiger has been killed after it was run over by a lorry on the East-West Highway near the Banjaran Titiwangsa rest and recreation area.

Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Yusoff Shariff said they received information on the incident at 9am on Saturday (Nov 9).

He said the tiger carcass was destroyed in the incident.

He said a video had gone viral showing the destroyed carcass strewn over the road, with only the head intact.

"Officers from Gerik who went to the site verified the information, he said.

"The carcass is destroyed, so we are unable to identify if it is male or female.

"We can't even estimate its weight but believe it was an adult tiger," he said.

"Our investigations revealed the tiger was hit by a lorry at around 5.30am.

"We managed to get hold of the driver who told officers that could not stop his vehicle in time when he saw the tiger on the road and hit it.

"Meanwhile, individuals who have taken parts of the tiger carcass like skin, fangs, bones, nails or whiskers must immediately hand them over to Perhilitan to avoid action taken against them.

"We have collected what parts are left and lodged a police report," he said.

Yusoff added that under the Wildlife Conservation Act, anyone found in possession of Malayan Tiger parts can be fined at least RM150,000 and jailed for up to 15 years.

"We are working with the police to collect information and track down those responsible for taking the tiger parts," he said.
