Over 45,000 EVs registered locally so far, says Transport Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 45,000 electric vehicles (EVs) have been registered locally so far, says the Transport Ministry.

The ministry said an encouraging total of 45,737 EVs have been registered with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) as of August this year, following the launch of an exemption on road tax fees for EVs in 2022.

It also announced that Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) is looking to expand its electric bus fleet by acquiring an additional 1,450 buses.

"This includes 250 new electric buses that Prasarana has acquired in phase one of its plans so far this year. We have also succeeded in fully electrifying all urban rail transport," the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply on xxxday (Nov 5).

It added that it plans to expand its solar photovoltaic (PV) installation efforts in 15 locations, including the Batu Gajah, Seremban, and Kempas depots, through Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB).

The ministry was responding to a question from Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (Perikatan-Setiu) who asked about its efforts in infrastructure development towards a green ecosystem.
