Higher Education Ministry gathering info on alleged Malaysian 'mercenaries' in Ukraine

KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry is still gathering information over claims that a Malaysian student is a mercenary in Ukraine, says Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

The Higher Education Minister said he is waiting for a full report.

"We will look into it first. It's too early to comment. I will obtain the necessary information first," he said outside the Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) mosque after Friday prayers here on Nov 1.

Earlier, Zambry attended the Temu Anwar programme with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at UPNM.

This was after several photos emerged of Malaysian identity cards and driver's licenses allegedly found on the battlefield in the Ukraine-Russia war, following the capture of a Ukrainian military fortress in Levadne, Zaporizhia by Russian forces.

The man in question is said to be with the 16th Rifle Battalion of Ukraine.

Among the documents discovered was one bearing a Padang Besar, Perlis address.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said police are looking into the authenticity of the documents.

He added that the police are obtaining detailed information from the Foreign Ministry.

As of Oct 29, the Foreign Ministry said it could not verify the information yet and advised Malaysians to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety while abroad.
