Budget 2025: Govt to focus on reducing fiscal deficit and national debt, says Fahmi

PETALING JAYA: The 2025 budget has seen efforts to reduce the fiscal deficit and national debt, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi noted the government's focus on enhancing fairness by assisting those who need it.

He said the Information Department and Madani communities will be mobilised to achieve this objective.

"This initiative aims to ensure that the more than 50 initiatives announced by the Prime Minister are understood so that information is accessible to all.

"We will utilise not only social media but also at the grassroots level,” he said at a press conference after the tabling of Budget 2025 by the Prime Minister in Parliament on Friday (Oct 18).

Earlier, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Finance Minister allocated RM421bil, of which RM335bil is for operating expenditure and RM86bil for development expenditure, excluding contingency reserves of RM2bil.

Beyond this, Fahmi pointed to public sector wage increases, a progressive wage policy, and the establishment of a new minimum wage as proof of the government's efforts to help alleviate Malaysians.

Some of the key budget measures highlighted include a significant increase in funding for Sabah and Sarawak, from RM300mil to RM600mil per state which the minister described as "a very large increase", he added.

In the 2025 budget, Anwar announced that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has agreed to allocate RM120mil to enhance internet connectivity at public universities, schools, military camps, and Mara institutions.
