PETALING JAYA: All animals at Zoo Negara are safe and in good health, assures its deputy president Datuk Rosly @ Rahmat Ahmat Lana after flash floods struck the area on Tuesday (Oct 15).
Rosly said Zoo Negara staff are also well-trained to handle such emergencies.
“The floods yesterday were bad but thankfully not as severe as previous ones that struck the zoo.
“All our animals were in their night quarters at the time of the downpour.
“Their quarters too are placed at a much higher level than the exhibit areas which puts them away from the floods,” he said when contacted on Wednesday (Oct 16).
“The public can be assured that our animals are all safe. Our staff are well trained to handle the situation, he added.
Rosly added that cleaning works at the zoo were also completed early Tuesday evening, with the zoo being opened later.
“The Fire and Rescue Department were very helpful with this and supported us in the process,” he said.
This comes after videos of Zoo Negara being flooded following the heavy downpour on Tuesday made its rounds on social media.
The rain brought flood waters that inundated numerous roads in Kuala Lumpur.
A landslide also occurred at Taman Melawati due to the heavy morning shower.
The Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit line's operation was also disrupted after tracks between the Sri Rampai and Wangsa Maju stations got flooded.
The rains also led to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul calling for a temporary halt to Parliament proceedings as several MPs were stuck in floods.
