Johor aims to resolve 90% of flood hotspots by 2025, exco chairman

JOHOR BARU: About 90% of the 102 flood hotspots in Johor are expected to be resolved by next year, thanks to the RM179mil allocation set aside by the state government, says Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor (pic).

The Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman stated that the project has been divided into three phases, beginning last year.

He explained that the state allocated RM50mil last year, RM50mil this year, and plans RM70mil for next year.

"All 16 local councils have identified 102 flood hotspots. This year, we have addressed 60%; next year, we plan to tackle another 20%, with the final 10% being a continuation of the 2023 project," he said.

This initiative follows the recent state disaster management committee meeting on Thursday (Oct 10), chaired by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Early preparations have been made, and the meeting focused on manpower and resource allocation following the recent floods that hit Kluang, Batu Pahat, and Pontian on Oct 6.

Datuk Mohd Jafni spoke with reporters after officiating the UDA Carnival 2024 at Plaza Angsana Johor Baru on Saturday (Oct 12).

He mentioned that all state executive councillors, along with state agencies including the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), have been called to streamline the process.

The meeting was also attended by the Malaysian Armed Forces, the Public Works Department, the Drainage and Irrigation Department, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Civil Defence Force, Rela, police, and all 16 local councils in Johor.
