10-year requirement for bike licence upgrade need not be continuous, says Transport Minister

PETALING JAYA: Those who have held a valid motorcycle licence for at least 10 years, whether continuously or not, can apply to join the Special Transition Programme for the Motorcyclists' Licence (LMM) Class B2/B1 to LMM Class B, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister stated that the licence did not need to be active for 10 consecutive years, noting that some may have lapsed in their renewals during the movement control orders at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Previously, the upgrade only applied to individuals who had actively held B1 or B2 licences for a continuous period of 10 years.

“This is in effect immediately. As long as the rider has held a valid B1 or B2 licence for at least 10 years, they are eligible,” he told a press conference at the ministry on Wednesday (Oct 2).

“The ministry is open to feedback. We can adjust to make things more convenient,” he added.

Loke mentioned that applicants with summonses also need to clear them before applying to join the programme.

On Aug 2, Loke announced a special programme to allow Class B1 and B2 licence holders to be upgraded to the B category.

Applications for the programme began on Monday (Oct 1).

A B2 licence allows holders to ride motorcycles up to 250cc, while the B1 ceiling capacity is 500cc.

At present, B2 holders wishing to obtain a B licence, which allows them to ride motorcycles of 500cc capacity and above, have to take a road test.
