Kedah floods: Drowned disabled teen's mother's body found 50m away

ALOR SETAR: The body of a woman who was reportedly swept away by strong currents with her disabled son in Kampung Tanjung Kanan near Kuala Nerang on Saturday (Sept 28), was found drowned at 7.45am on Sunday (Sept 29).

Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 head Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said the body of Salmah Mat Zain, 46, was found 50m from where the body of her son, Muhammad Rosman Rohadi, 19, was found.

"The search and rescue (SAR) operation of the victim resumed this morning at 7.28am and during the initial monitoring carried out at the location, the body of the victim was found around the palm plantation.

"The victim's body was then handed over to police at 7.50am for further action and the operation was called off after this," he said in a statement here on Sunday.
On Saturday, the media reported that the mother and son were swept away by the strong currents in a flood at about 8 am when they tried to cross the water to return to their home in Kampung Tanjung Kanan.

Rosman's body was found at 5.25pm on Saturday about 150m from the location where the two victims were seen swept away.

Meanwhile, Padang Terap OCPD Deputy Supt Mulkiaman Manzar, who was at the scene of the incident, advised residents in the district not to try to wade through the flood if their residential areas were flooded.

"We don't know what's under the water and we don't want events like this to happen again," he said.

According to him, the SAR operation involved 30 members of the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department including the Water Rescue Team (PPDA) from Sungai Petani and Jitra Fire and Rescue Stations (BBP).

In addition, he said, 25 officers and members of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), five members of the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) from Padang Terap and villagers were also involved.- Bernama
