DAP representatives vote on future leadership in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: The delegates' vote for new Penang DAP leadership will determine the party's relevance in the state, says Chow Kon Yeow.

The outgoing Penang DAP chairman said this in his speech during the state DAP Ordinary Convention held at Setia Spice Arena in Penang on Sunday (Sept 22).

“It's time for me to hand over the leadership to those elected today to guide Penang DAP forward," he said.

Earlier in September, Chow opted out of the state party elections, advocating for a new generation of leaders.

Having served as Penang DAP chairman for 25 years, Chow expressed gratitude for the support that had allowed him to lead.

"When I was re-elected as Chief Minister in 2023, DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke advised me to establish a succession plan. Today's convention allows delegates to elect a new team to elevate Penang DAP," he said.

Chow said the party has evolved since assuming state governance in 2008, with a significant increase in branches and achievements.

"We have come far but must remain dedicated and aligned with the party's vision, mission, and respect for the people. I'm proud to pass on a party that's stronger now than it was a quarter of a century ago," he added.

The convention sees representation from Penang DAP's nearly 300 branches, with each branch sending seven delegates, encompassing various key roles.

In addition to the branch delegates, MPs, assemblymen, and incumbent state committee members are also present as delegates.

As of 11am, 1,466 delegates have registered for the state elections.
