Pahang teacher loses over half a million ringgit to scammers


KUANTAN: A teacher has lost over RM527,000 after being duped by scammers posing as officers from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the police.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 51-year-old woman received a call from a person posing as an MCMC officer over "complaints" relating to her phone number before she was connected to another person posing as a police officer, who claimed she was involved in illegal activities.

The victim was told to open a new bank account and provide her PIN to the scammers.

From Sept 9 to 13, she transferred all her savings and proceeds from jewellery sales into the account before depositing a RM250,000 loan from a bank into the same account.

The scammers then told her to leave her ATM card at a specified location.

After realising she had been scammed, the woman reported the incident at the Raub district police headquarters on Wednesday (Sept 18). – Bernama
