Mount Kinabalu climbing routes closed due to heavy rain

KOTA KINABALU: Strong water flows from the top of Mount Kinabalu early Friday (Sept 13), forcing climbers and their guides to exercise extreme caution when making their way down the Sayat-Sayat checkpoint to Panalaban.

Continuous rains caused water in the summit to overflow into streams of rivers.

According to Sabah Parks officer for the Panalaban substation, Richard Yulong, all hike routes up the mountain were closed at 8.43am due to the bad weather.

The condition at the mountain was also reported to be windy and misty, he wrote in the report on the Sabah Parks Facebook page.

He said all the climbers and their guides made it safely to Panalaban with the assistance of Sabah Parks Search and Rescue (SAR) teams Nur Arrifin Japirin, Jerrye Calvin Patrick, and Ramzan Jatimin.

All staff and SAR officials are on high alert during the bad weather.
