Distraught son pleads with rescuers to save mum

KUALA LUMPUR: “Please save my mother. Save her,” cried the eldest son of Vijayalaksmi, who disappeared into a terrifying sinkhole in the heart of the city here.

The young man in his 20s had just arrived from Thailand when he heard the news about his mother.

After arriving at the site at about 9.30pm and seeing the gravity of the situation, he could not contain himself and started crying out to onlookers and the rescue personnel still digging for his mother.

The family is still clinging to hope that she will be found and the victim’s husband, clad in a dark green shirt and light-coloured pants, family and friends were seen going back and forth to the scene of the incident.

It is believed the victim has three children, and the news of the incident has left them devastated.

One of the victim’s friends said the children are anxiously waiting for their mother.

At the scene in Jalan Masjid India, there were two people digging up the area with a tractor clearing the debris.

Media personnel sheltered in the Malayan Mansion building were also awaiting news as many have been working since morning with some doing live reporting via social media.

Although the search and rescue team has been working around the clock in the hope of finding the victim, the situation seems grim as the night falls amid the drizzle. However, this has not dampened their spirits.

As at press time, personnel from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, police, Fire and Rescue Department, Indah Water Konsortium and Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) were working tirelessly to find the victim.
