‘Sustainability makes business sense for timber industry’

KOTA KINABALU: Sustainable forestry practices are vital for the long-term success of Malaysia’s timber industry, says Datuk Chan Foong Hin.

“The sustainability of our timber supply is vital not only for the continued success of our wood industry, but also for the preservation of our natural forests,” said the Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister.

He said this after touring two timber factories in Sabah’s interior Keningau, namely Focus Lumber Bhd and Uni-Lumber Sdn Bhd.

Chan also made a trip to the Sapulut Forest Reserve, managed by Jawala Plantation Industries Sdn Bhd (JPISB).

Also present were Tenom MP Senator Noorita Sual and JPISB chief executive officer Rahman Khan.

The visit to the forest reserve underscored the importance of sustainable forest management, with the reserve earning the “Best Model Forest Plantation in Malaysia” award from the Malaysia Timber Industry Board in 2023.

“The efforts of companies like JPISB, Focus Lumber and Uni-Lumber are exemplary in demonstrating how sustainable practices can be integrated into our forestry and logging sectors.

“These practices ensure that our natural resources are managed responsibly, providing long-term benefits for both the economy and the environment,” said Chan in a statement.

The deputy minister said Sabah’s timber industry continues to attract many foreign investors, including those from Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan.

“This strong international interest underscores Sabah’s growing reputation as a hub for sustainable and profitable forestry operations,” he added.
