Drone drops drugs on rooftop at Tapah prison

IPOH: A drone carrying a laundry bag containing plastic packets believed to be drugs was discovered on the rooftop of one of the blocks of the Tapah Prison.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said this modus operandi of smuggling drugs into the prison via drone is the first of its kind reported.

The incident occurred around 11.30am on Friday (Aug 9).

“A prison warden made a police report after a white drone was found on top of one of the prison blocks when he (warden) together with other personnel were carrying out their rounds.

“When they conducted checks, the warden found a laundry bag attached to the drone. Further checks found a translucent bag containing three packets of white powder believed to be heroin (122g), and two packets containing chunks of crystal believed to be methamphetamine weighing 12.9g,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 10).

Comm Azizi said based on initial investigations, the modus operandi used to smuggle drugs into prison using a drone, is the first case ever encountered.

He said the police viewed cases involving drugs seriously, and would carry out comprehensive investigations on drug trafficking activities, especially those targeting prisons.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, and Section 39A (1) of the same Act.
