GEORGE TOWN: A probe into a fistfight led to police arresting a man with a military background and the discovery of a cache of projectile weapons and a pistol.
The seizure includes two airguns with a pack of plastic pellets, empty ammunition magazines, and a bottle labelled “green gas”.
Airguns discharge plastic or steel pellets propelled by bursts of pressurised air with muzzle velocities reaching between 200m and 400m per second.
State police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in a follow- up operation, the suspect led police to an office in Kampung Baru Valdor on mainland Penang where a semi-automatic Glock pistol, a magazine and many rounds of ammunition were seized.Comm Hamzah said CID detectives found the weapons after arresting the 27-year-old suspect on Saturday in Juru 1 for alleged involvement in a fistfight last month.
“Police then detained three more suspects (from the fight) on the mainland,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He said the three suspects, aged between 19 and 24, were not related to the weapons discovery.
They are being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt with a weapon.
Comm Hamzah said the suspect with the weapons would also be investigated under Section 326, in addition to Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act and Section 36 of the Arms Act.All four suspects have been remanded for one week.
