Policeman charged with murder

HULU SELANGOR: A police lance corporal has been charged with the murder of Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah in a Magistrate’s Court where, moments before the proceedings began, members of both families present were reminded to control their emotions.

L/Kpl Muhammad Alif Monjani, 26, was brought into the courtroom at 10.15am yesterday to face the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code. He faces the death penalty, if convicted.

He was heavily guarded by the police as he was led into the court complex.

Just before the proceedings began, a female police officer manning the courtroom reminded the families of both the victim and the accused to “control their emotions” when the court convened.

According to the charge sheet, L/Kpl Muhammad Alif is accused of murdering the 25-year-old victim at Ladang SKC Keledang in Hulu Bernam between 9am on July 10 and 6pm on July 15.

The court interpreter then asked whether he understood the charge, and the accused replied, “Faham (Understood).”

No plea was recorded as murder cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Deputy public prosecutor Ku Hayati Ku Haron asked the court to fix a mention date in two months’ time pending the completion of telecommunications and DNA reports.

Sessions Court judge Mardhiah Mohammed Redza, who sat as a magistrate, fixed Aug 30 for mention.

After the proceedings ended, L/Kpl Muhammad Alif turned around from inside the dock to look for his family.

He was later escorted by the police out of the courthouse at about 1pm.

Lawyers Nur Aida Md Zainuddin and Aida Jaafar Mad Ariff represented the accused.
