NIBONG TEBAL: Abidin Ismail has hit the ground running following his victory.

“The first thing that came to my mind this morning (yesterday) was to solve the water supply woes for my constituents,” said the newly-elected Sungai Bakap assemblyman.

Abidin, 56, said he envisioned a good water supply for residents, especially those at Mukim 5, who have been suffering from the on-off water supply issues.

“We will keep engaging with the Penang Water Supply Corporation because we want to address the water issue, which is a problem for residents,” he said yesterday.

The Nibong Tebal PAS division chief also said that he would continue providing suggestions on strategies to deal with the matter.

As the people’s representative, he said it was his responsibility to voice their grievances at the state assembly.

He also refuted the general perception that electing a representative from the Opposition would mean nothing would be done.

“Being in the Opposition is not an issue. What is important is to ensure there is a check and balance in the current administration,” he said.

Earlier, he toured the constituency in a Perikatan Nasional-PAS decorated lorry thanking supporters.

Also present were Penang PAS commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff.

Abidin, a former logistics executive, described his win as a good start as it was the first day of the Muslim calendar (Awal Muharram) yesterday.

The former special officer to the late Sungai Bakap assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff said his work had begun from the time he was helping out Nor Zamri.

Abidin garnered 14,489 votes to defeat Pakatan’s Dr Joohari Ariffin, who secured 10,222 votes.

Turnout was recorded at 63.45%.
