Retiree falls for ‘8,000% returns’ scam

IPOH: A retired school clerk has lost about RM242,000 after being cheated in an investment scam she had come across on the Internet.

Kuala Kangsar OCPD Asst Comm Heisham Harun said the incident occurred in April when the 67-year-old victim became interested in an investment opportunity via a Facebook post, promising 8,000% returns on their initial investment.

“The victim made a total of 25 transactions into 16 different bank accounts between April and June.

“She only realised she was cheated after not getting the profits as promised,” he said, adding that the money was the victim’s own savings.

“She lodged a report on Friday,” he said in a statement yesterday.

ACP Heisham said people are advised to be more careful when browsing through social media platforms.
