Methyl mercaptan identified in Sepang chemical leak

SEPANG: The chemical that leaked at the Southern Support Zone Sepang Aircraft Engineering KLIA has been identified as methyl mercaptan, traced to an unused canister.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said the department was notified of the incident at 11.23am on Thursday (June 27).

Methyl mercaptan is used as a mixing compound for liquefied petroleum gas as a smelling agent.

Earlier today six firefighters and a Hazmat team were deployed to the scene, and by 5pm, the Hazmat team had successfully stopped the leak.

A total of 39 people suffered from dizziness and nausea, an increase from 20 reported earlier.
