Rasau Water Treatment Plant to boost Klang’s water reserve margin

KUALA LUMPUR: The water reserve margin for the Klang region is set to increase with the building of the Rasau water treatment plant.

Air Selangor Acting Chief Executive Officer Abas Abdullah said they have started constructing the Rasau water treatment plant stage 1, which will produce 700 million litres per day by the end of 2025.

"This will add additional water reserve margin, especially to the Klang region, which currently is supplied water solely from the Sungai Selangor water treatment plant," he said on Thursday (June 27).

The completion of the Sungai Rasau treatment plant, he added, will mitigate the impact on water supply for Klang as there will be two water sources for the region.

"This will reduce the risk to the Klang region," he said during the Air Selangor Sustainability Report 2023 press conference.

Abas noted that the water reserve margin in 2023 has increased to 15.34% from 12.02% in 2022.

This increase was due to an additional supply of 275 million litres per day from Langat 2 Western Corridor starting 27th August 2023, as well as the increase in distributable capacity of 250 million litres per day from the Sg Rasa Water Treatment Plant from November 2023.

Separately, when asked about water security concerns with the boom of data centres in the country, Abas said Air Selangor is confident it can provide the necessary water allocation to data centres without compromising the public water supply.

"We have received water applications from data centres in Setia Alam, Bukit Jalil, and Cyberjaya," he said.
