Cops actively probing into dubious apps

PETALING JAYA: Police have so far received two reports linked to the Dobemall and Dobevil mobile phone apps, involving over half a million ringgit in losses.

They will also work with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to take down Dobemall, which at press time was still available for download.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the two reports were lodged in Selangor and Sarawak, with losses estimated at RM540,600.

“Links between the two apps are being investigated. We do not deny the possibility of both being operated by the same syndicate.”

The Dobevil app had been highlighted in previous media reports after national mixed doubles badminton player Lai Pei Jing posted on her social media that she had fallen prey to an investment scam.

When contacted, Comm Ramli said the police are still investigating her case.

On whether Lai would be called again to provide additional statements, Comm Ramli said that as of now, the police have no plans to do so.
