Villager dies after fight with friend in Kota Belud

KOTA KINABALU: A man died after sustaining a blow to the head in a fight with a friend in Sabah’s northern Kota Belud district.

The incident took place at Kampung Gaur Podos in the wee hours of Friday (May 31).

Villagers alerted the police after realising a fight broke out between the duo at 2.13am.

Kota Belud police chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said a police team deployed to the location later found an unconscious man lying on the roadside in front of a house.

“Further checks found that there were injuries on the 48-year-old victim’s head,” he said, when contacted on Saturday (June 1). The man was subsequently sent to the district hospital where he was later declared dead by medical officers at 3.30am,” he added.

Acting on a tip-off, he said, the police managed to detain a 42-year-old suspect at 9.55pm on the same day.

Supt Shahrudin said the suspect had initially fled to hide in a farm at the village following the fight.

“We searched the farm but the suspect was eventually detained at his family home when he went there to retrieve some food,” he said.

Based on the initial probe, he said, it was believed the suspect and the victim got into an altercation due to a previous misunderstanding.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
