Ex-cop: Time to beef up police station security

PETALING JAYA: The pre-dawn attack on the Ulu Tiram police station is a wake-up call for authorities to review the strategic planning of police stations nationwide, says a former top cop.

Datuk Abdul Aziz Bakar, who had served as Johor Baru deputy OCPD was of the view that the Ulu Tiram police station needs beefing up in terms of visibility and manpower to ensure there is no recurrence.

“I was the deputy OCPD back in 1995 when Johor Baru was one big district. The Ulu Tiram police station building has no sentry post and with the flyover over it now, it is completely not visible.

“No one outside would know what happens in that police station.

“The structure has passed its time so this is a wake-up call for the authorities to shift the Ulu Tiram police station for its security, and maybe other stations nationwide that have security issues due to changed surroundings as well,” he said.

It was time that sentry posts at the front and back of police stations be brought back or modern security technologies be used to secure all police stations, he added.
