Abdul Ghani retires as EC chairman

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh has retired as Election Commission (EC) chairman after four years at the helm.

His compulsory retirement took effect on Thursday.

In a statement yesterday, the EC said Abdul Ghani had held the position since August 2020.

Previously, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said Abdul Ghani would hold the position as chairman until the age of 66.

Abdul Ghani himself had announced that he would retire on May 9.

In addition to serving in the EC, Abdul Ghani had also held several positions in public services, including as Kuala Langat District Council chairman, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) corporate planning and community development department director, as well as Gombak district officer.

Abdul Ghani’s replacement has yet to be named at press time.
